Project | VR Pots (Stop Motion Animation in VR)

I spent a few weekends experimenting with scale with some stereographic stop-motion animation in VR. By moving the cameras closer, I was able to make it feel like the items were life-size in VR.

To make this work:

  • I created a semi-circular small greenscreen stage
  • I built a camera rig featuring a pair fish-eye camera with variable IPD distance
  • Recorded a short stop-motion sequence involving animated pots (with googly eyes)
  • Embedded a series of CG elements
  • Projected a live feed of a stereoscopic image on a greenscreen background
  • Created an app on a viewing the 3 minute 3D video experience on Meta Quest headsets.

It is best experienced in headset because you get the embedded 3D Audio and CG elements, but here’s a short clip without audio from the experience.

And some images of the creation process…
