Project | VR Camera in Bird Feeder

I installed my custom VR camera rig into my bird feeder. Then, with OBS Studio and the Advanced Scene Switcher Plugin, I set it to record video when it detects movement, and it captured some good video of a Blue Jay, which I uploaded to DeoVR‘s streaming service (YouTube for Stereographic VR).

Screen capture of the Blue Jay.

Here is a link to my channel on Deo VR where I will continue to post experiments.

The custom camera is needed because I’m experimenting with different IPDs and how that changes the viewer’s sense of scale. With the bird feeder, the IPD is closer than usual, making the birds seem larger (or the viewer seem smaller).

Notes: It is interesting (although unsurprising) that the focal convergence between near and far is so significant, and this can be seen in the feeder. If I have the “focus set to inside”, the trees in the distance are misaligned (and vice versa). I ended up creating two Scenes in OBS. (One near, one far).

A possible solution is to swap scenes depending on where motion is detected and “blur out” the non-converged pixels. Not sure if I can accomplish that with my existing tools.

Simpler, I may just drop a cloth over the entrance so “non-converged branches” won’t strain your eyes.
